Vera Wang Fall ’12

If I learned one thing from Vera Wang’s fall show, it’s that when finessed properly, opposites really do attract.

While the black-white mixture don’t quite register, Wang’s understanding of opposites do, handled with substantial panache. Despite last season’s transparencies, which presented nothing practical to actually wear, this season Wang seems determined to convey some measure of pragmatism. Her sheer, delicate patterns remain, but this time, they are balanced by impressive outerwear, including several beige wool and (of course!) gray coats. Another noticeable contrast: bursts of vibrant mandarin in harmony with pale chiffons.

Soft and hard also play together in light blue organza and chiffon frocks with gem details and, more conceptually, graphic architectural designs on fluid silks. My favorite looks have to be the chiffon pieces, which are outfitted with intricate sequin pieces. Wang successfully displays a unique fusion of strength and delicacy.

Viola Davis and her husband sat next to Anna Wintour and the Vogue editor’s colleague Andre Leon Talley. Leighton Meester, Renée Zellweger, and Maria Sharapova also looked pretty sitting in the front row.
